Proper classification, declassification and safeguarding of classified information are vital to the security of our nation. This protection must continue throughout the life cycle of the information--creation, reproduction, maintenance, disposition and of course, dissemination--whether across the facility or across the world. This two-day course of instruction introduces the student to the classification system established by Executive Order 13526 and ISOO Directive Nr. 1, the requirements for properly marking classified products and the rules for safeguarding classified information. Specific topics covered include:

•    Evolution of Executive Orders
•    Terminology used in EO 13526
•    Purpose of the Executive Order
•    Specific contents of the Executive Order
•    Impact on classification/declassification decisions
•    How the EO affects you as a Security Professional
•    What is classified information?
•    What are the litmus tests that information must meet before it is eligible to be classified?
•    Challenging classifications
•    Declassification
•    Purpose of markings
•    Three levels of classification
•    Original versus derivative classification
•    Why Original Classification is so important
•    Security classification guides
•    Access to classified information
•    Need to know versus information sharing
•    Specific instructions for marking classified documents
•    The problems caused when documents are improperly marked
•    What you can do to ensure you have a strong classification management program
•    General safeguarding requirements
•    Control and accountability of classified materials
•    Storage and storage equipment
•    Transmission of classified information
•    Rules for disclosure of classified information
•    Reproduction of classified materials
•    Disposition of classified materials
•    Construction requirements for secure rooms
•    Intrusion Detection Systems
•    Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information

In this course, the instructor briefings are complemented by student participation in a classified document marking exercise using a Security Classification Guide. The Executive Order requires that all derivative classifiers receive training every two years in proper marking of classified documents and safeguarding principles. This course meets this requirement.

Note:  The topics covered in this course are redundent with day one and two of the Security Specialist and NISPOM courses. Thus, if you have taken one of these two courses, you may not want to take the Information Security course unless you feel you need a refresher in classification, declassification and safeguarding.
